Hello
I hope all is well with you and that you can enjoy some downtime in the coming weeks.
As an update on the progress regarding book development I have now produced a handmade prototype which has made me confront the important questions that shape the form of the final outcome. As a result I have changed direction and have decided that rather than a book similar to those I’ve done previously, I should make a portfolio book - I see these two things as being very different.
The portfolio book has prints such as those kept in the clamshell boxes or framed and hung on the wall - the book, simply(ish), has the prints fixed to each other and can be folded down to look and act like a standard book. Equally, the prints can be opened out to create a linear presentation. As mentioned previously, I’m always thinking of how work might be exhibited and felt this approach could work with the portfolio book standing open on a long floating shelf (or similar).
Whether picked up as a book or opened out for a linear display, the design allows me to deal with the two distinctly different approaches to the subject - one in colour and the other black & white - the two are separated and can’t be viewed together side by side. For all that the design can successfully deal with some of what I wanted to achieve, there are still the other elements to be considered such as narrative, along with the many other ideas I would like to communicate.
This is still very much ‘work in progress’. I will continue the technical explorations of materials and design enhancement along with other considerations. This will take time so further updates are unlikely to appear until well into the new year. As I continue working on the portfolio book I will also be printing and exploring forms for exhibiting the work. I’ll still be out with the camera too - you can see the latest work on Instagram here.
I sincerely hope you have the chance to take an enjoyable break in the coming weeks.
Paul
