Hello
Hope all is well with you there.
I have been busy during the last week making the first set of prints from the Cerrig/Stones project - a project that I started just over a year ago in the Preseli Hills of west Wales. Now, having enough material to see the formation of what might be called a ‘portfolio’ or ‘body of work’, it seems like a good time to start developing a new book. Making prints is an important starting point for me but I am still very much at the beginning of scoping out what form a book of these photographs might take.
I’ve been making both black & white and colour images which makes this project slightly different to those previously undertaken. This has the potential to add another layer of complexity to the book’s design - perhaps I should keep it simple and do two books?
As with previous work, Cerrig/Stones focuses on the landmarks and details of a specific area leading me to spend much time engaging with its history and culture to help inform the picture-making process. Whilst I always feel I can never do enough of this research, what I have done provides me with an opportunity to think about whether or not there should be a written dimension to the book. Yet another question to think about before I get anywhere near layout, sequencing and design! Over the coming weeks I’ll be answering these and many more question including book size, number of images, materials, editions, handmade and/or facsimile, etc, etc? I will therefore be taking inspiration from books that others have made as I’m sure everything they do is there for a reason - it’s never just a random presentation of photographs. I’ll start by working through what’s on my own bookshelves…
Over the coming weeks and months I will update you on the progress of the book’s development and offer some insights into the Cerrig/Stones project itself - it has actually transformed the way I think about photography. Until then take care.
Paul

You've inspired me to visit and spend time with the rocks on the Preseli Hills recently. Very much looking forward to seeing more Paul.
Lovely work Paul. Have enjoyed seeing this on socials too
