Hello
Hope all is well with you. Some news and updates…
I will be taking part in the panel discussion ‘Photography and the Valleys’ at the National Museum Cardiff on Thursday 28 November at 1pm. For the discussion I’m joining Siân Addicott (Director of Ffotogallery), Ian Walker (Writer, Historian, Artist), David Barnes (Course Leader Documentary Photography, USW) and Bronwen Colquhoun (Senior Curator of Photography at National Museum Wales).
This promises to be a fascinating review of the relationship between photography and the Valleys in terms of historical, contemporary and future activity. As well as considering the photography currently on display at the Museum, there will also be a discussion regarding new initiatives shaping the on-going relationship between photography and the Valleys. Further information and tickets are available from the National Museum Cardiff events page.
To briefly update you on other activities…
I have just produced a book proof, Capeli, that brings together a sub-section of my work on chapels in Wales. I started photographing chapels over ten years ago - the first of these were in west Wales followed by many in the Valleys (the latter were subsequently exhibited as part of the Diffusion Festival in 2019). Capeli represents a small selection from those photographed in west Wales - I have found those included to have something of an aura about them. I describe them as having a ‘peculiar presence’ and being ‘mysterious and otherworldly’ in the accompanying essay.
The book is a large 300mm x 300mm format and, as with previous books, I will live with it for a while before deciding next steps (whether to publish, what formats, etc). It is unlikely that I’ll continue photographing chapels in the future so this might be an appropriate way for me to finish my work with them.
I continue to make new work though! As I continue to narrow my focus on a couple of themes it does mean that other aspects, as with the chapels, are being brought to appropriate conclusions. I am regularly adding new work to my Instagram feed - why not take a look and see what I’m doing.
Thanks for reading and I hope you can get to the Museum for the discussion. It would be good to see you.
Take care
Paul
