Hello
Hope all is well with you.
As mentioned in my last post, I have had the great pleasure to meet and work with Valleys photographer Walter Waygood over the last few months. The exhibition of his photographs The Family of Blaenavon is now on at Blaenafon Workmen’s Hall. I wrote the essay Walter Waygood: Man of Mystery for the accompanying publication.
As someone who has also photographed in the Valleys I couldn’t help but feel there was a certain mystique surrounding Walter Waygood. His name kept appearing, particularly in relation to Ffotogallery’s Valleys Project, yet he was nowhere to be found. When, after several decades, I finally met Walter one half of the mystery was quickly solved - for over twenty years he had exiled himself to work in the New Forest. The second half of the mystery - how he managed to create photographs that show the deep and sincere connection he has with his subjects - is, to a large extent, the subject of my essay.
