Hello
Hope all is well with you.
A selection of photographs from my End of the Row series (1998-2000) have been included in a new exhibition The Valleys which is on show at Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales, Cardiff 25 May - 3 November 2024.
‘With over 200 artworks in a wide range of media including painting, photography, film and applied art, the exhibition reveals how the lives and landscape of the Valleys and the people who lived and worked there were transformed by iron and coal, and how these communities made a vital contribution to the modern world’.
This is the best exhibition of visual work exclusively relating to the Valleys I have seen (and I have seen a few…) - so congratulations to Bronwen Colquhoun and Nicholas Thornton who worked together curating the show.
I have also contributed an essay responding to the exhibition specially written for Celf ar y Cyd (part of the National Contemporary Art Gallery for Wales). With the title Experiencing the Valleys the essay considers personal responses to place and time.
‘Experiencing the Valleys through pictures is not the same as having a lived experience of the place and those in it. Yet pictures and other artforms including literature, cinema, and music, can allow us to meaningfully glimpse facets of people, place, and society. When done well, artworks can go further and communicate an essential essence…’
The essay can be found on the Celf ar y Cyd website. I hope you will have the chance to read it and visit exhibition in Cardiff.
Take care
Paul
